Basement Mold Remediation and Removal

Molds, or moulds, are fungi that grow in the form of mycelia and usually produce masses of spores that are most commonly asexual but can also be sexual. Mold is the growth of these minute fungi on organic matter usually resembling a downy or furry coating. Molds do not make up a specific taxonomic or phylogenetic grouping--they can be found in the divisions Zygomycota, Deuteromycota and Ascomycota.

A damp basement provides plenty of moisture for mold to grow well in your basement. Basement mold can easily grow into the floors and walls above. In addition, airborne mold spores from the basement mold can travel in air currents to mold cross contaminate your entire house and its heating/cooling system.

Your first step is to mold test the air of the basement, each room above, the attic, garage, and the outward air flow from each heating/cooling duct register for the possible presence of elevated levels of airborne mold spores, in comparison to an outdoor mold control test. Use do it yourself mold kit from Mold Busters.

All wood beams, wall timbers, roof trusses, floor joists, plywood surfaces, and other lumber to be saved need to be totally cleaned of mold growth by using Teflex mold remediation and removal products---or replace the moldy timbers. Mold cannot eat polystyrene insulating board such as Pinkboard or Blueboard, but mold can grow on organic dust which lands on the insulating board.

Teflex® is a universal antimicrobial coating suitable for the protection of surfaces of a diverse nature; such as, concrete, wood, metal, tile, glass and different types of textiles.

Teflex is a very efficient new polymeric disinfectant that works at low concentrations against bacteria, viruses and fungi. It is odorless, colorless and its pH is close to neutral. Its ability to provide long-term biocidal protection distinguishes Teflex from many other disinfectants available on the market today. Also in contrast to many other products, Teflex is environmentally friendly and does not contain any hazardous substances. The use of Teflex for the disinfection of water supplies helps to solve the problem of corrosion, a problem that often occurs when using other commercially available disinfectants.

Teflex forms an extremely thin, practically non-existent layer that adheres firmly to the treated surface. The layer has a microporous structure that does not suffocate the surface it is being applied to and thus allows for the treated surface to breath.
